76. Madison County -- Marshall -- 5/28/07

Howdy! I've finally gotten back into Courthouse Chasing! I hope I haven't lost all of my fans...welcome back! Jenn and I opened the 2007 Courthouse Chasing season with Durham, but we made a trip out of it. On Memorial Day weekend, we headed up to visit my parents in Buncombe County. Of course, what's a trip like this without going to places you've never been? However, I've been to Madison County before, so this doesn't follow the logic of the previous sentence. But, I had never been to Yancey or Mitchell Counties, and I hadn't gotten Madison, so we'll start there!
For starters, YES, Madison County has BRIDGES! Jenn and I crossed a few, as a matter of fact. The book and movie are about Iowa. NC is not Iowa. Also, I have never been to Iowa. My grandparents used to live there, but that was before my time. I'd like to get out to the Hawkeye State sometime.
I remember my first trip to Madison County...it was in 8th grade. For my birthday, my aunt and cousin took me white water rafting on the French Broad. You have to get on the river in Hot Springs, NC, which, yes, has Hot Springs! Kinda like the Bridges! We stayed with my grandparents in Buncombe County, and I had to make a tiger or something for Spanish class by gluing yarn onto cardboard. It took forever, and I got burned by the hot glue gun a lot. This was one of the first counties I recall thinking WOW! I've never been to Madison County before! This is going to be SO COOL! And, it was.
Madison County is known for Mars Hill College where a teacher of mine and a friend of mine , Chris, both attended. Also, I had another friend, Luke, whose father works there. Also, I have a friend from UNC named Daphne, who is from Madison County. This entry is dedicated to all of them!
My coworker John used to stock fish in Madison County, and he remembers the county being one of no big roads, and everything was completely backwoods. But now, I-26 and 19/23 are nice and big! But, it's bad for the small towns that suffer from bypasses, like Marshall (25/70).
The county seat is in Marshall, and to get there from 19/23 involves a few interesting intersections and turns. But, when you take the business route into town, a town of about 840, by the way, you wind around a mountain side, and BAM! There's the town right there! The courthouse looks quite similar to the Halifax County courthouse...there must be a racket on courthouse building in NC! This one, though, has Lady Justice on top about to whoop up on some speeders.
Jenn and I got smoothies at Zuma Coffee shop across the street from the courthouse. The downtown seemed to not be much more than the main street there, which was very neat. The coffee shop was one of the only things open on Memorial Day, and they were exceptionally nice. I asked the lady at the counter if she wanted to be in the picture, and she laughed. She said she has enough to do with that courthouse, since people show up to get married without witnesses, and they walk over to the coffee shop and ask ask if she'd witness their wedding. She does this a few times a week. I was at my cousin's wedding this past weekend in Maryland, and it was awesome. I got to see tons of family, which was great. Getting married at the courthouse with no witnesses? I don't know if I could handle that! If you've had, or know someone who has had, a courthouse marriage that was awesome, I'd love to hear about it! Post it as a comment!
With that, we drove through Mars Hill, and we were off to Yancey! Give Madison County (and its bridges and Hot Springs) your lovin!
