70. Ashe County -- Jefferson -- 7/18/06

Ashe County is the County that inspired me to really do Courthousing...I watched the new one being built over the years I came up here to help rebuild delapidated housing with my church. It's also the cornerstone (or "keystone"...that's a hint to the "Not Courthouses" post below! Hint, hint) courthouse for me...I'm now finished with the entire Virginia border, and it's the first I have along the Tennessee border...all at the same time!
Not to mention, as a special guest, wearing my "Ashe County Loves You" shirt, is ADAM, the founder of the ORIGINAL (not the Amy/Charles) CRAPENDIUM! If you don't know about how the Crapendium influenced Courthousing, refer back to my first post, and click the link on the right to see the Amy/Charles Crapendium. Wow, what a great courthouse.
Also, no, you're not seeing double (or triple)...yes, the Olde Ashe Countye Courthouse is NOT the same as the Old Stokes County Courthouse (#22) or the whitewashed Wilkes County one...they (plus others, like Craven, hidden in the dark) are just built in Second Empire Style. Spooky stuff, ain't it? Adam also told me the mountain in the background, now Mt. Jefferson, used to be known as [N-word] Mountain, because apparently, slaves used to hide in the caves during the time of the Underground Railroad on their way north. Adam's grandfather has a map with it called that from the 1950s. I'm glad they changed it...Mt. Jefferson has a little better ring to it.
